"A CELESTINA."

Yace en esta tierra fría,
Digna de toda crianza,
La vieja cuya alabanza
Tantas plumas merecía.

No quiso en el cielo entrar
A gozar de las estrellas,
Por no estar entre doncellas
Que no pudiese manchar.

        Francisco de Quevedo.

Lies in the cold earth,
Worthy of all breeding,
The old whose praise
Many feathers deserved.

He would not enter in heaven
To enjoy the stars,
Not to be among maidens
He could not stain.

"LETRILLA LÍRICA." / "LETTER LIRYC."

Rosal, menos presunción
donde están las clavellinas,
pues serán mañana espinas
las que agora rosas son.

¿De qué sirve presumir,
rosal, de buen parecer,
si aun no acabas de nacer
cuando empiezas a morir?
Hace llorar y reír
vivo y muerto tu arrebol
en un dia o en un sol:
desde el Oriente al ocaso
va tu hermosura en un paso,
y en menos tu perfección.
Rosal, menos presunción
donde están las clavellinas,
pues serán mañana espinas
las que agora rosas son.

No es muy grande la ventaja
que tu calidad mejora:
si es tus mantillas la aurora,
es la noche tu mortaja.
No hay florecilla tan baja
que no te alcance de días,
y de tus caballerías,
por descendiente de la alba,
se está rïendo la malva,
cabellera de un terrón.
Rosal, menos presunción
donde están las clavellinas,
pues serán mañana espinas
las que agora rosas son.

   Francisco de Quevedo.

Rosal, less presumption
where carnations are,
as they will be tomorrow thorns
Roses are the Agora.

What good is presumed,
rose, good-looking,
if you have not you just born
when you start to die?
He makes mourn and laugh
alive and dead your arrebol
in a day or in a sun:
from the east at sunset
will your beauty in one step,
and within your perfection.
Rosal, less presumption
where carnations are,
as they will be tomorrow thorns
Roses are the Agora.

Not very big advantage
your quality improvement:
if your mantillas dawn,
night is your shroud.
No floret so low
you do not reach days
and your horses,
by descendant of the dawn,
Mallow is laughing,
hair of a lump.
Rosal, less presumption
where carnations are,
as they will be tomorrow thorns

Roses are the Agora.

"A UN HOMBRE DE GRAN NARIZ." / "A MAN OF BIG NOSE."

Érase un hombre a una nariz pegado,
Érase una nariz superlativa,
Érase una alquitara medio viva,
Érase un peje espada mal barbado;

Era un reloj de sol mal encarado.
Érase un elefante boca arriba,
Érase una nariz sayón y escriba,
Un Ovidio Nasón mal narigado.

Érase el espolón de una galera,
Érase una pirámide de Egito,
Los doce tribus de narices era;

Érase un naricísimo infinito,
Frisón archinariz, caratulera,
Sabañón garrafal morado y frito.

             Francisco de Quevedo.

Once upon a man stuck a nose,
Once upon a superlative nose,
Once upon a medium alquitara alive,
Once There Was a bad bearded peje sword;

It was a bad-looking sun clock.
Once upon an elephant on his back,
Once upon a sayón nose and write,
A bad narigado Ovid Naso.

Upon the spur of a galley,
Once upon a pyramid Egito,
The twelve tribes of noses was;

Once upon an infinite naricísimo,
archinariz Frisian, caratulera,

purple glaring and fried frostbite.

"RELOJ DE CAMPANILLA." / "WATCH BELL."

El metal animado,
a quien mano atrevida, industrïosa,
secretamente ha dado
vida aparente en máquina preciosa,
organizando atento
sonora voz a docto movimiento;
las peregrinaciones de las horas;
máquina en que el artífice, que pudo
contar pasos al sol, horas al día,
mostró más providencia que osadía,
fabricando en metal disimuladas
advertencias sonoras repetidas,
pocas veces creídas,
muchas veces contadas;

La hora irrevocable que dio, llora;
que los blasones de la edad desmiente;
y en traje de reloj llevas contigo,
del mayor enemigo,
espía desvelada y elegante,
a ti tan semejante,

The lively metal,
who bold, industrious, hand
secretly gave
Apparent life beautiful machine,
organizing attentive
sonorous voice learned movement;
in whom, unknown
secret spirit, briefly
in a tight orb,
It shows the path of fiery light,
and wheel importunate
the work of the sun and moon,
and between sunsets and auroral
pilgrimages hours;
machine where the architect, who could
count steps sun, hour,
providence showed more daring,
You concealed metal manufacturing
sound repeated warnings,
rarely believed,
often counted;
you, you are precious
have the right, the filing,
to hear different,
serves your intention and your sound.

The time gave irrevocable, he cries;
provide for that is to give; and you all,
lógrala well that in the same time
you grow up and you are away.
If you've been curious,
atiéndele prudent,
that belies crests of age;
costume and watch you carry with you,
the greatest enemy,
disclosed and elegant spy,
so like you,
who, presuming to shorten light
life in the sun, the sky the race,
covers all this admired machine
in a sick and delicate rope,
that as the health healthier,
She is spent with its wheels and hand.

Estimated their memories,
fears disappointments,
It is running time for the years
and he gives you a secret,
each sun passing to each ray,

death a counter, the time a schoolmaster.

" A LA MAR." / " TO SEA."

La voluntad de Dios por grillos tienes,
Y escrita en la arena, ley te humilla;
Y por besarla llegas a la orilla,
Mar obediente, a fuerza de vaivenes.

En tu soberbia misma te detienes,
Que humilde eres bastante a resistilla;
A ti misma tu cárcel maravilla,

God's will for crickets have ,
And written in the sand , law you down ;
And kiss you reach the shore,
Mar obedient , by dint of swings.

In your arrogance you stop it ,
That you are humble enough to resistilla ;
A jail yourself thy wonders ,
Rica , our evil, our goods .

Who gave the pine and beech Dare
To occupy his dwelling fish ,
And Lino block the path of the wind?

No doubt the see prey, imprisoned ,
Greed haggard gold
Wrath of God directed man.
